Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA has a variety of uses, touted as the supplement that contains the fountain of youth.

What is DHEA?

DHEA is a hormone secreted by the Adrenal Glands. As with many hormones, it peaks early in life, but declines with age. Some medications can also decrease levels.

The body converts DHEA into other needed hormones like Estrogen and Testosterone.

Low levels of DHEA have been associated chronic inflammation and even metabolic syndrome.

Many patients, who supplement with DHEA, claim to just feel better than they did before. Reports from patients include sleeping better, more energy, and feeling less stressed.

Research even seems to be showing that low levels of DHEA are a greater indicator of a heart attack than high cholesterol.

Arteriosclerosis has also been associated with low DHEA.

So what are some of the uses and benefits?

DHEA could…

  • Enhance Immunity
  • Reduce the Risk or Slow Down Some Cancers
  • Reverse the Negative Effects of cortisol
  • Work to Prevent Osteoporosis
  • Decrease the Risk of Heart Disease
  • Reduce Inflammation

DHEA has been shown to increase immunity by enhancing the immune cells to fight off disease. This also contributes to its anti-aging effects as it fights oxidation.

Specific benefits for women: Studies suggest that DHEA could improve the sexual functioning in older women.

Men with erectile dysfunction may benefit, as well. Taking DHEA has been shown to increase sexual function, desire, and satisfaction.

DHEA has been used as a weight loss supplement in both men and women. More studies need to be done, but the effect may be due to hormone balance and lower inflammation.

Research will continue to reveal DHEA’s safety and uses. But, so far, studies seem to indicate that it is a supplement to consider. Bone, heart, and brain health could all benefit.
